during the Red Scare, there were a lot of things it was dangerous to be: foreign, poor, an artist, and for some reason, gay.

so, let’s talk about that reason.

gay people were super in the closet, and if people knew you were gay, you could be considered an enemy of the state, a danger to society, automatically labelled as a leftist or a spy, and denied work just about anywhere.

that’s because the soviet union was using gay people as spies, by blackmailing them into sharing state secrets (military intelligence, that sort of thing)

why could they use this as blackmail? because they knew that it was super dangerous to be gay in the us, and most gay people would do whatever it took to keep that from getting out!

why was it dangerous to be gay in the us?

because the us thought you were a spy if you were gay.

why did they think you were a spy?

I saw this great post that went kinda like this, about how knitting rejects societal norms of standardized sizing and how you don’t have to depend on what society dictates for you to wear because you can make whatever you want to wear, and it basically came down to “I’m making stuff where I lacked stuff before; it’s fucking punk rock”

Umm so since I’m stupid could someone kindly explain each step for me like step 3 am i head butting him in the face or the chest?

I think it depends on the height of the person, but I suppose the head is a more effective target. I hope this helps :)

Step 1: Step back the moment he reaches for you.

Step 2: Duck!

Step 3: Head butt him in the chin. It’s very important that it is the chin and not the chest because it is much more uncomfortable and disorienting to have your teeth bang together especially if it cuts his tongue (which it will if it is in the way). More than likely height won’t matter. He will be leaning forward from the missed attempt at grabbing you.

Step 4: Knee him in the balls.

Step 5: When he doubles over, jab him on his back. I believe at the base of the neck just above the shoulder blades would be best. I’m not an expert, but this seems like the best place, imo.

Step 6: Don’t lose contact. Bring your other hand over and slam your hands against the sides of his heads as hard as possible. Right on the ears is the best place; it is extremely disorienting if done correctly. Then take his head and bring it down on your knee as you bring your knee up. It’s very important that you avoid the nose because if you knee his nose it will definitely break and more than likely the bones will stab his brain killing him, so aim for his mouth instead.

Step 7: Keep your knee up and bring your foot out to kick him over. Personally, I don’t like the image because it looks like she kicked him with her toes. You do not want to do that. Instead kick him with the ball or heel of your foot and put power behind it with a push.

Step 8: He is on the ground. You could probably stop here and he would get the picture, but if you really want to…Your leg is still in the air from the kick. With all your force slam the edge of your your heel on his side. It will be more effective if you lower your body first by bending at the knee of the leg your weight is on. Done right, you can break a rib or two.

for the record, boxing the ears (step 6) is a really good way to win a fight. it’s disorienting, it’s relatively easy to do and hard to block (because people aren’t normally thinking about it) and you could cause temporary deafness, which is gonna slow their reaction time (you could also cause permanent deafness in one or both ears, but I’m talking short term)

although if you’ve already reached step 6, you’re probably pretty good to go

Nerdfighter Benedict? Or just failed Vulcan?

As far as I can tell, there are eight possibilities here. (I’ve spent a fair bit of time thinking about this.)

1. Benedict Cumberbatch is a hardcore nerdfighter and when Martin Freeman threw up a gang sign, Cumberbatch was like, “I have one of those.”

2. Cumberbatch, who obviously has a relationship with Star Trek, just naturally changed the Vulcan sign (pulling in the thumbs, turning the palms inward, crossing the arms) in precisely the same way that I happened to change the Vulcan sign when I first made the nerdfighter sign in the halcyon days of 2007.

3. One of the interns on set who has gained the trust of Benedict Cumberbatch was like, “If you do your hands like this, the Internet will get really excited.” And so he did.

4. BBC, in their infinite wisdom, staged the entire photo and Cumberbatch was taught the nerdfighter sign (I MEAN LOOK AT THE PERFECTION OF HIS NERDFIGHTER SIGN! He seems so comfortable and confident in it, almost as if it is muscle memory, almost as if he has flashed it to his laptop screen on hundreds of occasions in the past, but I digress) and this photograph was staged to get people psyched for Sherlock, although what tiny segment of nerdfighteria is not already psyched for Sherlock? Also, if this is the case, who is Martin Freeman trying to advertise to? Residents of the West Side?

5. Benedict Cumberbatch has a relative or a friend who is a nerdfighter and so he is passingly familiar with nerdfighteria and liked what he has seen and wanted to make us all very happy.

6. The nerdfighter sign also happens to be the hand sign of some obscure English gang with which I am unfamiliar called like The East London Wanderers or The Slightly Intimidating Liverpudlians or whatever.

7. Nerdfighteria actually figures in the plot of the new season of Sherlock. Perhaps a nerdfighter has been (wrongly no doubt!) accused of a murder.

8. Benedict Cumberbatch was playing some kind of British version of Rock Paper Scissors against two invisible opponents, and he went double scissors (as any smart person would).

i mean, like, yes, most of the people benefiting from this will be women of color in the sense that they are not white. but most of the people in venezuela are, y’know, latin@, so i guess it doesn’t make sense to me to call them women of color? if the majority of people benefiting from a law made in venezuela were not what we in the us would call people of color, that would be horrifying.
